Coming Soon: The Southern Hemisphere's Largest Solar Plant
But this isn't a picture of it! This is Nyngan Solar Farm in NSW, the current largest plant in Australia at 102 Megawatts.
Maoneng Australia and Decmil are teaming up to build a 250 megawatt direct-current solar photovoltaic power plant, Sunraysia (about 17 kilometres from Balranald in NSW) and those in the know expect construction to start as early as April or May this year.
Three larger projects are also planned, Equis Energy’s 1000-megawatt solar facility in Wandoan, Queensland, Lyon Group's 330-megawatt Riverland site in South Australia, and Photon Energy’s 316-megawatt plant in NSW, however Sunraysia should be completed first.
It is expected that Sunraysia will supply electricity to both NSW and Victoria, and therefore shore up energy security in both states, and it is also anticipated that extensive battery storage will enable energy supply during periods of peak demand rather than just during daylight hours.
